Since the start of the twentieth century, each decade has been marked by major medical discoveries which have revolutionised the possibilities for medical interventions as well as man’s perception of himself and his omnipotence. Death becomes unacceptable and life more and more manipulable. The pill, medically assisted conception, gene therapy, organ transplants, intensive and palliative care are all part of this transformation. The history of these medical discoveries enables the analysis of what’s at stake and the consequences of the current bioethical debate.
